Prepare to work safely in Civil Construction design
Qualification
OVERVIEW
This unit of competency specifies the mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work. It requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to themselves and others. The unit covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also includes correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used in construction work.
Who can Enrol?
The target learner cohort for this short course consists of individuals aged 18 years and over who are seeking to commence a career in the residential and commercial civil construction sector. Candidates are expected to have an interest in hands-on, practical work environments and aspire to develop the foundational skills and knowledge required to work safely and effectively within the civil construction industry.
Pathways
Completion of CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry provides participants with the foundational knowledge required to enter the construction
industry and to apply for a White Card through the applicable state or territory authority. This unit may also contribute to a range of vocational pathways across construction and related
trade qualifications within the CPC Training Package.
Learning and career pathways vary between individuals based on their goals, prior experience, and learning needs. While participants may be provided with general guidance on
future training or employment options, completion of this unit does not guarantee employment, industry licensing, or enrolment into further qualifications.

Pathways from the unit
Successful completion of CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry enables participants to apply for a White Card through the relevant state or territory authority, which is generally required for individuals wishing to enter construction worksites.
This unit may contribute to pathways into further vocational training across the CPC Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package and other related trade or civil construction qualifications. Examples of potential pathways include entry level roles in construction support roles and/or progression to nationally recognised qualifications such as Certificate II or III level qualifications within the construction industry.
Note: In the absence of formal English qualifications, Omni College may proffer English Placement Test.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal prerequisites required to enter the CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry course. However, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
English Language Requirement
Minimum IELTS score of 6.0, PTE score of 47, or other equivalent tests*.
*For English language requirements, please refer to Table 1: English Language Test Scores as specified in the Admissions and Student Selection Policy on the Omni website: http://www.omni.edu.au.
Academic Requirement
No prior academic requirements apply for this qualification; however, Omni College requires successful completion of an Australian Equivalent Year 12 qualification or higher.
Age Requirement
All applicants must be aged 18 years or over at the time of applying for admission to the course.
Language, Literacy, Numeracy (LLN) and Digital Literacy test
Applicants will be required to demonstrate their LLN proficiency and digital literacy capabilities, and/or complete an LLN and digital literacy test prior to the commencement of the course, as per the Omni College Pre-Training & LLN and Digital Literacy Policy & Procedure. Omni College uses LLN Robot and Jotform for LLN proficiency and digital literacy assessments, respectively.
Other
Applicants should have basic computer and MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). They should also have their own personal computer with a minimum configuration of:
- Processor: Intel Core i3 (sixth generation or newer) or equivalent
- Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional x64
- Memory: 4 GB RAM
- Storage: 120 GB internal storage
